PCC Honors Five Staff Members for Outstanding Performance

WINTERVILLE—Pitt Community College presented Staff Excellence Awards to five employees this month in recognition of their superior efforts to support the school’s educational mission.
During a Dec. 4 virtual town hall meeting for faculty and staff, PCC honored John Carrere, Victoria Davis-Gibbs, Nicole Jones-Phelps, Susan Marsh and Ken Peel for exceptional customer service, quality innovation and outstanding job performance. Each honoree received a $100-stipend and certificate through their award.
Peel was also named Pitt’s 2020 Joan and Ed Warren Staff Employee of the Year Award recipient. As the college’s distance learning content creation specialist, he works with instructors to develop content they can use to teach students online. When the coronavirus pandemic forced PCC to shift most of its classes online earlier this year, Peel was instrumental in organizing and converting HRD classes into an online format.
As the Staff Employee of the Year, Peel will receive a one-time payment of $300 and have his name placed on a plaque honoring previous award recipients. He will also receive up to $1,500 to attend a regional or national professional development activity.
Carrere, a PCC and East Carolina University graduate, is the director of Pitt’s Office of Recruitment. As such, he organizes various events throughout the year to showcase the college’s programs and services to potential students.
Davis-Gibbs is the Science Department’s administrative assistant. Her award nominator noted her ability to calmly assess situations and provide appropriate responses to students she is assisting.
As PCC’s lead curriculum facilities scheduler, Jones-Phelps coordinates class locations each semester. She contributed significantly to Pitt’s smooth transition from traditional classroom instruction to online and hybrid courses following the COVID-19 outbreak.
In her role as a student success advisor, Marsh assists students with academic planning and course selection. Her nominator cited her dependability and reluctance to take credit for her hard work.
Staff Excellence Awards are typically announced during the annual PCC Employee Appreciation and Recognition Evening in the spring. However, the event was one of many the college could not hold this year due to the pandemic.
