Non-Us Citizen Applicant and Student Guide

Asylee/Pending Asylum

  • May be required to provide approval notice (I-94) or if pending Employment Authorization Document (EAD work permit, Category C08)

DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals)

  • Required to provide valid EAD (work permit, Category C33) or valid approval notice (Form I-821)
  • Required to provide updated information when current expires (updated every 2 years)
  • Not eligible for Financial Aid
  • Does not qualify for In State Tuition in NC
  • Can not utilize the Public High School Graduate Tuition Exception
  • Can not utilize Non-Profit Sponsored Tuition
  • Can apply for Business/Employer-Sponsored tuition

F1 International Visa

  • Must meet with International Student Coordinator
  • Does not qualify for In State Tuition in NC
  • Can not utilize the Public High School Graduate Tuition Exception
  • Can apply for Non-Profit Sponsored Tuition
  • Can apply for Business/Employer Sponsored Tuition
  • Currently only eligible for Transfer Programs (AA/AS/AE)
  • Must enroll in 12 credit hours with only one online class per 12 hours

Other Visa Statuses

  • Bs, Cs, and D Holders can not enroll, must be approved for F1
  • F2 Visa Holders can enroll part time, for full time must change status to F1
  • A, E, G, H, I, J, L, R, T and U Visas may be admitted/enrolled and may be asked to provide approval notices (I-94)
  • M Visas Must enroll in the school who issued the I-20

Refugee

  • May be required to provide approval notice (I-94)

Temporary Protected Status (TPS)

  • May be required to provide approval notice (I-821) and/or EAD work permit (Category A12)

Undocumented (no legal status/docs, expired status)

  • Can be admitted only if graduated for a US public high school, private high school or home school that operates in compliance with state or local law (Not GED or foreign HS, AHS is permitted)
  • Will not be able to register until after late registration (right before classes begin)
  • Does not qualify for In State Tuition in NC
  • Can not utilize the Public High School Graduate Tuition Exception
  • Not eligible for Financial Aid
  • Not eligible for Health Science Programs (competitive programs)
  • Programs that grant Professional Licenses from certain states could be prohibited

US Permanent Resident (Green Card)

  • No documentation required for admission, only for NC Residency Determination
  • Pending PR should have a valid EAD work permit (Category C09)
