Kathryn “Kay” Whichard, a charter member of the Pitt Community College Board of Trustees, passed away Sunday at her home in the Cypress Glen Retirement Community. She was 92.

Ms. Whichard became a PCC Trustee in 1961 and went on to serve with the board more than 20 years, including service as its chair. PCC paid tribute to Ms. Whichard’s commitment and contributions in 1981, when it named a 25,644-square-foot academic building in her honor.

Today, the Kay V. Whichard Building on PCC’s main campus is home to the college’s Advertising & Graphic Design, HVAC and Fine Arts programming.

PCC will be forever grateful for Ms. Whichard’s leadership and dedication in helping the school grow from Pitt Industrial Education Center in 1961 to Pitt Technical Academy in 1964 to Pitt Community College in 1979.

For those wishing to honor Ms. Whichard’s life, her family has requested that memorial gifts be made to the Van Nortwick Scholarship Fund c/o Pitt Community College Foundation, P.O. Box 7007, Greenville, NC 27835; Cypress Glen Benevolent Care Fund, 100 Hickory St., Greenville, NC 27858; or Jarvis Memorial United Methodist Church, 510 S. Washington St., Greenville, NC 27858.

Rest in peace, Ms. Whichard, and thank you for helping PCC become one of the state’s leading community colleges.
