Theresa Newman, co-director of Duke University School of Law’s Wrongful Convictions Clinic, speaks with PCC students about the extensive legal process it took to free Greenville's Dontae Sharpe from prison in 2019. Sharpe was accused of murdering a man in 1994. He was convicted and sentenced to life in prison a year later but never wavered in maintaining his innocence. A judge granted Sharpe a new trial last year, but prosecutors announced they would not pursue trying the case any further.
