EVENT: FilmFest Double Feature — “The Great Debaters” and “Harriet”

TIME: Feb. 27, from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. and from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m.

LOCATION: Davenport Multipurpose Room (Craig F. Goess Student Center)

DETAILS: “The Great Debaters” features Denzel Washington as poet and professor Melvin B. Tolson, who teaches at the predominately black Wiley College (TX) in 1935. Tolson decides to start a debate team at Wiley, something nearly unheard of at a black college. While he initially butts heads with the influential father (Forest Whitaker) of one of his best debaters, Tolson eventually forms a team of strong-minded, intelligent young students, and they become the first black debate team to challenge Harvard’s prestigious debate champions.

Featuring Cynthia Erivo, “Harriet” details abolitionist Harriet Tubman’s escape from slavery and the dangerous missions she led to liberate hundreds of slaves via the Underground Railroad.
