Fire Academy

The Pitt Community College Fire Academy (Academy Class #24) is a comprehensive, 26-week training program designed to prepare you for a rewarding career in fire and emergency services.

By combining rigorous classroom instruction, hands-on practical skills training, and structured physical fitness development, the Academy provides the exact knowledge and credentials needed to serve as a professional firefighter and emergency responder.

Important Dates

  • Application Opens: July 1, 2026
  • Application Deadline: July 30, 2026, at 7:00 PM
  • Mandatory Orientation: July 30, 2026
  • Academy Start Date: August 24, 2026

How to Apply

Download the application packet and carefully review all application requirements and submission instructions. To apply, submit:

  • Completed academy application
  • All required supporting documentation
  • Application statement
  • Fire Chief Sponsorship Form

A background investigation and drug screening will be conducted after the application has been submitted through a predetermined state-approved provider for applicants selected to attend the academy.

Applications must be received by July 30, 2026, at 7:00 PM.

Admission Requirements

To be considered for the upcoming cohort, applications must meet the following criteria:

  • Be at least 17.5 years of age by the academy start date
  • Possess a valid government-issued photo identification
  • Possess a high school diploma or GED (or be able to obtain prior to graduation)
  • Complete and submit all application document
  • Attend mandatory orientation if selected
  • Demonstrate the ability to participate in physical training and practical skills evolutions
  • Obtain a Fire Department Sponsorship Form completed by a Fire Chief


Membership in a fire department is NOT required for admission. 

Certifications Earned

Students who successfully complete all academy requirements may earn:

  • North Carolina Firefighter I & II
  • Hazardous Materials Operations
  • Technical Rescuer – Vehicle Machinery Rescue
  • North Carolina EMT (pending successful completion of all state requirements)

Tuition, Fees & Equipment

Students currently listed on the active roster of a qualifying North Carolina fire department may be eligible for tuition waiver under applicable state regulations.

Students are responsible for: 

  • Uniform costs
  • Required supplies
  • Personal equipment
