Student Rights and Responsibilities
Students registered with the Office of Accessibility Services (OAS) at Pitt Community College are active participants in the accommodation process. Rights, responsibilities and self-advocacy are integral to acquiring and maintaining accommodations.

- Receive equal access to courses, programs, services, activities, and facilities offered through the college.
- Receive reasonable and appropriate accommodations, academic adjustments, and/or auxiliary aids, as determined in accordance with applicable laws.
- Expect that information regarding their disability and the need for accommodations will be treated confidentially, except as required to facilitate the request for services.
- Refuse accommodations and/or services at any time without jeopardizing rights to any future accommodations and/or services.
- Appeal/file a grievance to appeal or file a grievance regarding an accommodation request outcome or issues related to disability discrimination or treatment.
- Meet the academic standards and requirements of the college.
- Advocate for their individual needs in a timely manner.
- Self-identify the nature of the condition and submit all required documentation to the OAS by stated deadlines.
- Discuss their accommodations with faculty at the time of delivering the Letter of Accommodation. It is recommended that students meet with faculty during scheduled office hours.
- Notify OAS Director if there are difficulties in securing granted accommodations or with the quality of the modifications.
- Report new diagnosis acquired while already registered with OAS staff in order to obtain accommodations for the new diagnosis.
- Follow through with procedures for accommodations and/or services mutually agreed upon with OAS staff in order to continue receiving services.
- Indicate to the Office of Accessibility Services their desire to receive accommodation services by picking up their Letter of Accommodation for each instructor.
- Meet with staff at the beginning of each semester to review granted accommodations and student responsibilities.
- Provide updated, relevant, and current disability documentation if requested.
- Complete necessary forms for requesting accommodations (textbooks, note taking services, assistive technology, etc.).
- Meet with faculty to discuss individual accommodation needs.
If a student experiences absences as a result of their disability, they should notify their instructors and the Office of Accessibility Services immediately. Additional documentation will be required.
If accommodations include books in alternate format, interpreter services, note taker services or accessible classroom furniture, contact the Office of Accessibility immediately after registering for classes and prior to the start of the semester. All assistive technology on loan must be turned in at the end of each semester. A hold will be placed on the student’s record if the equipment is not returned.
Regardless of disability, all students must comply with the Pitt Community College Student Code of Conduct. Adherence to and compliance with the Code of Conduct is considered a core requirement of ongoing enrollment at the college. Students with disabilities are subject to the same disciplinary policies, procedures and sanctions as non-disabled students.
At least a two-day notice is required in order to test in the ODS Testing Room. If our office does not receive a verbal request for test administration from the student, we cannot administer the test. It is the student’s responsibility to ensure the request for test administration has been communicated with faculty and staff (please refer to OAS Testing Accommodation Policy).
If eligible to take exams in the OAS Testing Room, in addition to notifying the faculty, students must contact the Office of Accessibility Services at least two days before each exam to secure a seat in the testing room.
