RBR Submissions

General Submission Guidelines

Reedy Branch Review is published annually. Submissions are welcome throughout the year. The deadline for the next issue is September 15, 2018.

RBR is especially interested in publishing the work of Pitt Community College students, faculty and staff, and supporters, but we also encourage submissions from writers associated with other community colleges and from anyone who supports the mission of America’s community colleges.

All submissions will be read. Response time will vary depending on the time of year and the volume of submissions received, but we try to respond within two-three months.

Simultaneous submissions are permitted, but please withdraw your submission in a timely fashion through the submission management system if your work is accepted elsewhere.

You are welcome to submit work in more than one genre, but please follow the genre-specific guidelines which can be found below.

Thank you in advance for sharing your work with us!

Fiction Guidelines

RBR publishes only original short fiction written in English. Work of any length will be considered, as long as it fits the generally accepted criteria for short fiction. We don’t accept novels, novel excerpts, or novellas, but other than those restrictions stories ranging from micro-fiction to rather long stories are welcome.

We are open to stories written in a wide range of styles, and we are especially interested in hearing new voices–stories about characters and situations not often the subjects of contemporary short fiction.

The editors read every story submitted. Please limit your submission to no more than two stories per submission period, except in the case of flash fiction (stories of 1000 words or fewer); you may submit up to five flash fiction pieces.

Submissions are accepted only electronically–click on the SUBMIT button below. Please submit your work in one of the following file formats: DOC or DOCX, RTF, or PDF. If your work is accepted for publication, a Word-compatible file will be requested for use in the editorial process.

Poetry Guidelines

RBR is looking for previously unpublished poems, primarily in English. Poems in other languages will be considered if accompanied by a translation. We are open to a wide range of forms and styles in contemporary poetry, and we are always watching for fresh new voices, especially writers who use language in new and exciting ways or who can offer unique perspectives on the human condition and the world around us.

The editors read every poem submitted. Please limit your submission to five pages of poetry per submission period. Multiple poems may be combined into one document for ease of submission, but place each poem on a page by itself, unless you are submitting longer poems. Consider submitting multiple poems as it’s helpful to see more than a single short poem so that we get a fuller sense of your work.

Creative Nonfiction Guidelines

RBR is looking primarily for personal or autobiographical essays–a subgenre of what is commonly called “life writing”–that illuminate a particular theme and help us see the world in new ways. We are also open to considering especially well-written essays that fall under the broader genre of creative nonfiction.

The editors read every essay submitted. Essays should be single spaced and no longer than 3,500 words. You may submit up to two essays per submission period.

Artists

We would like to include some original artwork in each issue, including on the cover. Work in any medium that can be reproduced in a printed document will be considered; please send good quality photos or scans so we can give your work the consideration it deserves.
