Submit Work to RBR
Reedy Branch Review publishes work from Pitt Community College students, faculty, staff, and anyone who supports the mission of the North Carolina community college system. RBR is published every April.
Submission Policies and Terms
Simultaneous submissions are permitted, but please email reedybranchreview@my.pittcc.edu if your work is accepted elsewhere. RBR does not require a fee for submission, and RBR cannot offer payment at this time for any work that is accepted. Reedy Branch Review acquires first publication rights of accepted work. All rights revert to the author upon publication. If republishing, we ask for acknowledgment of initial appearance in Reedy Branch Review. Submissions to more than one category are permitted. Previously published work should not be submitted. Selected works will recieve a Pushcart prize nomination.
Guidelines
Fiction
RBR publishes short stories, flash fiction, or a selection from a longer work as long as the selection can stand alone. Works of 5000 words or fewer will be considered.
Please no children’s books.

Poetry
RBR publishes poems in any form and style. All poems should be in one document with a page break between each poem. Up to three poems allowed.

Creative Nonfiction
RBR publishes creative nonfiction, such as personal narratives and memoirs to immersive journalism. Works of 5000 words or fewer will be considered. For submissions based on true events, please change the names of any real people unless they are public or historical figures.
RBR defines creative non-fiction as a non-fiction narrative featuring the experience of a true event, written about from a single, usually the author’s, point-of-view. While details, such as the exact wording of a conversation, may take creative license, and while the names of real people in the narrative can (and should) be changed to protect privacy, the actions, reactions, and discussions detailed should have been experienced first-hand.

Visual Art

RBR publishes any visual art medium that can be reproduced in a printed document. Please submit a high-quality photograph of your artwork.
Submit only one artwork per submission. The title of the file must be the artwork title. No more than three submissions.

Artwork Submission Guidelines
To ensure the highest quality presentation of artwork in our magazine, please follow these image submission requirements:
Required Standards
Artwork Only
- The image must feature only the artwork.
- Do not include visible backgrounds, surroundings, or unrelated objects
Straight-On Photograph
- The artwork should be photographed directly from the front, not at an angle.
- Avoid tilted or skewed perspectives.
No Glass or Frames
- Do not photograph artwork behind glass, as glare and reflections reduce image quality.
- If your artwork is framed, remove the glass before photographing.
Minimal Background
- Crop or photograph the image so that little to no background is visible.
- The artwork should fill the frame as much as possible.
File Preparation
- Submit images in a high-resolution format (JPEG or JPG preferred).
- Label files with your name and artwork title (e.g., Lastname_Title.jpg).
- Visual art file sizes is must be larger than 1 GB and should be at least 300 ppi.
Tips for Best Results
- Lighting: Use natural light when possible. Indirect daylight (near a window but not in direct sun) helps capture true colors.
- Camera Position: Place the artwork vertically and align the camera directly in front of it to avoid distortion.
- Neutral Background: If any background shows, make sure it’s plain and neutral so it doesn’t distract from the work.
- Editing: Cropping out excess edges or adjusting brightness/contrast is acceptable if it accurately reflects the original artwork.
- Stability: Use a tripod or place your camera/phone on a stable surface to prevent blurriness.
