1 - What is SACS?

SACS is the acronym for the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.


2 - What does SACS do?

The Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) is one of six, private, voluntary, nonprofit regional accrediting associations in the United States. SACS, which was established in 1895, is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. Its mission is to "improve education in the South through accreditation."


3 - Is PCC accredited?

Pitt Community College was initially accredited in 1969. PCC's accreditation was last reaffirmed in 2003.


4 - Is accreditation permanent?

SACS requires that an institution's accreditation be reviewed every 10 years. Since our accreditation was reaffirmed in 2003, we are scheduled to be reaffirmed in 2013.


5 - Why is accreditation important?

Accreditation by a recognized regional accrediting association (such as SACS) is required of higher education institutions in order for them to be eligible to receive federal funding and indicates that Pitt Community College meets the standards of quality set by the accreditation organization in terms of faculty, curriculum, administration, libraries, financial well-being, and student services.


6 - What are some benefits students receive from Pitt Community College's reaccreditation?

New students, returning students, and families of students can trust that the education they are paying for at Pitt Community College is valuable and worth their time, money, and effort.


7 - What is a Quality Enhancement Plan?

QEP stands for Quality Enhancement Plan, which is a long-term (5-year) improvement project, identified through an institution-wide process, focused on improving student learning outcomes in one domain, and/or the environment supporting student learning.


8 - What is the topic selected by Pitt Community College for their Quality Enhancement Plan?

"Career Planning and Academic Advising"

Student advising and career planning can play a critical role in student persistence and completion. Studies show that students who declare a degree intention have higher success rates for degree achievement. By enhancing advising and career counseling services, PCC can increase student success by helping students understand their educational options and form a clear path from education to a career.


9 - When will the on-site visitation committee observe Pitt Community College?

The Visiting Committee will be on campus September 18-20, 2012.


10 - When will the decision about Pitt Community College's reaccreditation be finalized?

Pitt Community College is seeking reaffirmation of accreditation for June 2013.
