Still Time for Students to Register for SPAN in Order to Prepare for Fall Semester Classes

WINTERVILLE—Pitt Community College will launch its annual Summer Program for Academic Navigation (SPAN) next month to help recent high school and GED graduates make a successful transition into higher education this fall.

Started in 2010, SPAN is part of PCC’s “Ready for College Initiative.” Jasmin Spain, PCC Director of Student Conduct, Mentoring and Academic Progress, says the goal is to promote college readiness through academic acceleration efforts, curriculum class exposure, campus resource awareness, and career exploration.

“SPAN is a winning situation for everyone involved,” Spain said. “Students save time and money on higher education, and PCC is more effective at helping students complete their educational goals.

Starting June 26, Spain says SPAN participants will receive English, math and computer instruction five days a week until Aug. 1. They’ll also take part in workshops that cover topics ranging from financial literacy and goal-setting to time and stress management, he said.

“Students who combine a positive attitude with the will to succeed get the most out of SPAN,” Spain said. “We tell them up front that they must forgo a summer of recreation in exchange for a summer of educational advancement.”

In order to evaluate student growth and program effectiveness, Spain said students must take PCC placement tests in computers, math, reading and writing before starting their SPAN coursework. He said the students retake each test at the program’s conclusion to measure their academic progress.

Spain says SPAN’s benefits to students are many. He said their tuition, books and resource materials are provided to them at no cost and they receive three college credits for completing a basic study skills course (ACA 090) through the program.

Spain said staff from the college’s Foundational Studies Division work in partnership with Student Development Services personnel to make SPAN successful.

Individuals who would like to participate in SPAN this summer should contact Cheri White, PCC Achievement Coach/Developmental Instructor, at (252) 493-7632 or chwhite@email.pittcc.edu by June 9.
