Service Learning in Nursing

Overview of Service Learning Projects

For many years, nurses have been nominated as one of the most trusted professions. This honor has been bestowed upon nursing deservingly; nurses frequently go above and beyond the call of duty to make a difference in someone else’s life. Service should not be limited to a job function, but extend to the community also. Service projects are a rewarding experience for all recipient involved. Here at Pitt Community College, the nursing department values service and giving back to our community. Therefore we have incorporated service learning projects into our curriculum. Students have an opportunity to provide a service to their community as well as better understand resources available. When our students graduate from Pitt Community College we hope they will understand the value of service as well as be cognizant of area resources available as they interact with diverse patient population.

Some of the service projects Pitt Community College nurses are involve in includes:

Service Learning Project Evaluation Guidelines

Participation in the service learning project and completion of the required paper is mandatory for successful completion of NUR 120 clinical objectives. Refer to student handbook for policies on clinical tardiness/absence/evaluation.

Project Paper

Submit a type written paper addressing the following information:

  1. Describe the agency and the role it serves in the community
  2. Describe the role/activities you were involved in during the project
  3. Share your personal feelings related to being a part of the project
  4. Explain the importance of RN’s volunteering in the community

Type each statement above (#1-4) in bold and write 1-2 paragraphs under each statement. Papers should be no longer than 2 pages. Please use correct spelling and grammar. Use professional language.  

The paper is due on Monday at 0900 hours following the completion of the four hour project. Please place in Ms. Martin’s mailbox in F175

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of the service learning project, the student will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate the use of effective communication techniques with the organization/agency, staff, and/or its participants.
  2. Implement the service learning project by collaborating with and utilizing appropriate resources.
  3. Develop individual accountability 

Project Implementation Guidelines

  1. Must have a minimum of four (4) service hours completed by designated date.
  2. Represent yourself and PCC in a positive and professional manner.
  3. Display your PCC ID badge for all agency contacts.
  4. Agency contact person should complete evaluation below and return to student on last project day.
  5. Service Learning Projects are considered clinical time; refer to PCC student policies regarding absences or tardiness. Students must also notify agency contact.
