'Dawgs Use Second-Half Surge to Top CVCC
HICKORY—Pitt Community College scored the first five baskets of the second half and went on to beat Catawba Valley Community College on the road Sunday, 85-75.
Coming off a five-point win over Johnston Community College the day before, PCC zoomed out to a 9-1 lead in Sunday’s game against the Buccaneers.
CVCC responded, though, and put together a 23-12 run to take the lead at 24-21 with 9:31 to go in the first half. The Bucs went to the free-throw line on four of six possessions during that span.
A spurt by the Bulldogs gave PCC the halftime lead at 42-41 before the early surge after intermission put them on top, 52-43, just four minutes into the second half.
PCC held onto the lead the rest of the way and fought of a late CVCC run to go 15-10 overall and 8-3 in the Region X Conference.
Keovonta McDuffie scored 20 points for Pitt to go along with four rebounds. Chuckie Becton added 14 points and eight boards for the ‘Dawgs, and Demetrio Irby dropped in 15 points and dished out six assists.
Next up for the Bulldogs, who have now won three straight and nine of the past 12, will be their home finale Feb. 18 against Guilford Technical Community College. Tip-off in the Charles Coburn Center is set for 3 p.m.
