'Dawgs Go 3-2 in Brunswick Tournament
SHALLOTTE—Pitt Community College volleyball reeled off 17 straight wins between Sept. 13 and Oct. 14 before falling to Ridgewater College, 3-1, in the Brunswick Community College Tournament.
Overall, the Bulldogs finished 3-2 in the Brunswick tourney, which featured Pasco Hernando, last year’s NJCAA Division II national champion, in addition to Ridgewater—the 2010 NJCAA Division III national champs.
PCC began tournament play with a 3-0 (25-21, 25-6 and 25-19) victory over College of Southern Maryland to push its win streak to 17 before losing a close one to the Warriors, 21-25, 25-23, 25-23 and 25-22.
After topping Brunswick, 3-0 (25-13, 25-13 and 25-21), Pitt battled Pasco Hernando before falling to the Conquistadors, 25-19, 25-23 and 25-18.
The Bulldogs closed out the weekend with a 3-1 victory over Cape Fear, the team’s second victory over the Sea Devils this season. After dropping the first game, 25-23, Pitt won the final three, 25-22, 25-22 and 25-21.
For the weekend, Catherine Barber led PCC in kills with 43 to go along with 26 digs. Brandi Tanner had 32 kills and 33 digs, and Megan Mansfield finished with 42 kills and 13 blocks. Taylor Norris tallied 38 kills and 16 blocks, while Leah Mackley and Angele Landry recorded 81 and 62 assists, respectively. Stephanie Zampini led PCC in digs with 64.
Following the BCC Tournament, Pitt returned to action Oct. 18 and defeated Lenoir Community College in the Charles Coburn Center to remain undefeated in Region X Conference play at 10-0.
The Bulldogs are 23-5 overall and will host conference foes Guilford Tech and Wake Tech on Oct. 21 before away games against Louisburg College, Cape Fear Community College, Brunswick Community College and Johnston Community College to close out the regular season.
