Sophs Beth Jones, Angele Landry and Leah Mackley Play Final Home Contests

Sophomores Beth Jones, Angele Landry and Leah Mackley, left to right, won their final home games as Bulldogs. Pitt was 11-0 in the Coburn Center this season.

The Pitt Community College volleyball team recorded three more wins over Region X Conference foes before eventually dropping its first conference match of the 2011 season to Cape Fear Community College on Sunday in Wilmington.

The Bulldogs, who are 26-6 overall, 13-1 in Region X play, dropped set one to the Sea Devils, 26-24, before drawing even with a 25-22 victory in set two. But after narrowly winning the third frame, 25-23, Cape Fear managed to avenge a pair of earlier-season losses to Pitt with a 25-17 victory in the fourth to close out the match.

Catherine Barber tallied 18 kills, 13 digs and two aces for PCC. Taylor Norris finished with 11 kills and five blocks, and Megan Mansfield added 10 kills. Angele Landry and Leah Mackley each had 23 assists, and Stephanie Zampini led the way in digs with 16.

Pitt started the weekend with a pair of victories at home over Guilford Tech and Wake Tech on Friday before beating Louisburg College on the road Saturday.

Barber (nine kills) and Norris (eight kills) paced the Bulldogs offensively as they topped Guilford, 25-9, 25-3 and 25-8 in Friday’s first match. Landry had 19 assists.

In PCC’s final home game of the season, the team beat Wake in Friday’s second match, 25-18, 25-23 and 25-14, behind Barber’s 11 kills and seven digs.

Mansfield and Brandi Tanner finished with seven kills apiece against the Eagles, and Zampini had 14 digs. Playing in the final home game of their Pitt careers, sophomores Mackley and Landry posted 17 and 14 assists, respectively.

With Saturday’s 3-0 (25-18, 25-17 and 25-21) win at Louisburg, PCC swept the regular-season series with the Hurricanes.

Zampini turned in a solid defensive effort with 21 digs. Mackley had 17 assists while Mansfield and Norris finished with 10 kills each.

Barber had nine kills for the Bulldogs, who must play Brunswick Community College and Johnston Community College Oct. 28 to close out the regular-season schedule.
