Volleyball Runs Winning Streak to 16 Games

Catherine Barber finished with 56 kills in four games over the weekend.The Pitt Community College volleyball team improved to 19-3 overall with a 3-0 victory over Wilkes Community College Oct. 8 in the second game of a doubleheader at Catawba Valley Community College.

The Bulldogs, who have now won 16 in a row and are 8-0 in Region X Conference play, took set one from Wilkes, 25-5, before winning the final two frames, 25-11 and 25-13.

Catherine Barber and Taylor Norris led the way for Pitt with 12 and 11 kills, respectively.

Earlier in the day, PCC topped CVCC by a 3-1 count to sweep the regular-season series with the Buccaneers.

After the Bulldogs took set one, 25-19, CVCC rallied to take the second, 25-21, before falling to Pitt in the final two, 25-14 and 25-23.

Barber finished the match with 16 kills, nine digs and six aces to lead the PCC offensive attack. Brandi Tanner had six kills and 13 digs, and Taylor Norris finished with nine kills and four blocks.

Megan Mansfield notched 14 kills and three blocks for the Bulldogs while setter Leah Mackley tallied 19 assists and four digs.

PCC started the weekend with a pair of five-set victories on Friday at Spartanburg Methodist College.

In game one, Pitt beat the Pioneers for a third time this season, taking set one, 25-17, before dropping set two, 26-24. The Bulldogs, who were led by Mansfield’s 22 kills and three blocks, claimed the third frame, 25-15, before falling in set four, 25-19. PCC closed out the match with a 15-13 victory in the final set.

Norris had 13 kills and four blocks against SMC. Barber had a double-double with 14 kills and 11 digs. Mackley had 24 assists, and Stephanie Zampini had 15 digs.

In Friday’s second contest, Pitt topped Andrew College (GA.) in five sets, 25-17, 16-25, 20-25, 25-19 and 15-11.

Mackley had 19 assists and six digs, and Barber finished with 14 kills and seven digs.

Mansfield tallied 11 kills, Norris had nine, and Tanner recorded nine kills and six digs.  Zampini chipped in with15 digs. 

The Bulldogs will face stiff competition this weekend in Shallotte as part of a tournament hosted by Brunswick Community College Friday and Saturday. Pitt will face College of Southern Maryland, Ridgewater College, Brunswick Community College today before tackling Pasco Hernando and Cape Fear Community College in Saturday’s action.
