PCC Closes Late But Falls to Catawba, 65-58
HICKORY—Down 15 at the break, Pitt Community College rallied to within three points with a little less than a minute remaining, only to fall to Catawba Valley Community College Friday, 65-58.
A lack of offensive rhythm led to quick shots for the Bulldogs in the first half against the Buccaneers. The result was easy scoring opportunities at the other end of the floor for CVCC, which shot 49 percent from the field and 56 percent from behind the arc in the first half for a 43-28 halftime lead.
Pitt stepped up defensively in the second half, holding the Bucs to just 22 points on 32 percent shooting over the final 20 minutes. The Bulldogs pulled to within 61-58 with 42 seconds on the clock, but a CVCC 3-pointer made it 64-58 at the 22-second mark. A late Buccaneers free throw provided the final margin.
With 15 points, Zack Beam led Catawba Valley offensively. Zack Hayes pitched in with 12 points.
Tyrelle Jackson led all scorers for PCC with 16 points. Terrence Drakeford scored 12 and Darren Wilson added 11 for the Bulldogs, who fell to 1-10 overall with the loss, 1-7 in the Region X Conference.
Next up for the Bulldogs is Wake Tech Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the Charles Coburn Center. Including tomorrow’s game against the Eagles, Pitt will play its next seven games at home.
