Becton, Jackson Power PCC to First Win
HENDERSON-With a pair of post players in foul trouble, Chuckie Becton and Tyrelle Jackson moved to the paint from the perimeter and led Pitt Community College to its first win of the season-79-78 over Vance-Granville Community College.
Becton, a 6-3 small forward, scored a game-high 29 points for the Bulldogs to go along with 16 rebounds for a double-double. Jackson, meanwhile, turned in a 21-point, nine-rebound effort.
PCC led early against the Vanguards, going on top 10-5 before 6-10 center Colton Butler and 6-5 forward Darren Wilson picked up three fouls apiece by halftime with the score tied at 33-33.
Though Pitt scored on each of its first three possessions of the second half, a VGCC run gave the Vanguards an eight-point lead with 10 minutes remaining.
After Wilson fouled out, PCC coach Darrick Mullins asked Becton and Jackson to move from the perimeter to the post and the result was a one-point win.
Guard Terrance Drakeford added 14 points for the Bulldogs, who improved to 1-9 on the season, 1-6 in the Region X Conference.
Next up for Pitt is Catawba Valley Community College on Jan. 28 in Hickory. After that, PCC will play eight of its final 10 games in the friendly confines of the Charles Coburn Center.
